Abstract

This study examined the intersection of labour law and environmental concerns in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa with a focus on evaluating the effectiveness of existing legal frameworks in addressing environmental issues in the workplace. It gives in-depth knowledge of how labour and environmental laws collectively protect workers from occupational and environmental hazards, identify gaps in statutory and institutional arrangements, and propose recommendations for an integrated, sustainable regulatory approach.  The methodology adopted for this study is predominantly qualitative utilizing a combination of legal frameworks. The findings revealed that while labour and environmental statutes exist in Nigeria and the region, significant fragmentation, weak enforcement, and limited inter-agency coordination undermine their effectiveness in protecting workers from environmental hazards. Climate change and informal sector employment further exacerbate workplace vulnerabilities, highlighting the insufficiency of current legal frameworks to address emerging occupational risks. The study concluded that an integrated legal and institutional approach is necessary to harmonize labour protection with environmental governance, strengthen enforcement mechanisms, and incorporate climate-responsive measures. Implementing such reforms would enhance workplace safety, promote environmental justice, and ensure sustainable development in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa.
